COMMISSION A PAINTING
A commissioned painting is a way of marking something that matters — a person, an animal companion, or a place that holds meaning. Rather than choosing something already made, you’re part of the process of creating a piece that is personal and specific to you.
I work mainly in oil, building paintings thoughtfully so that colour, texture and character can emerge over time. Each commission begins with a conversation about what you would like the work to capture.
What can be commissioned & Getting Started
Commissions may focus on a person, an animal, or a place that holds personal significance. Scroll below for details of making pet portraits.
Each painting is approached individually, with the aim of creating something thoughtful and lasting.
The process usually begins with photographs and a short conversation about the subject of the painting. From there we can discuss size, format and timing. See section below for how the process works in the case of a pet portrait.
If you’re considering a commission, email me the your photos, tell me what you’d like done and rough timeline and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can to discuss the details.
Classically painted pet portraits
These portraits are made from photographs and a few notes about your pet’s habits or personality. I paint them slowly in oil paint, allowing small details and expressions to emerge as the work develops. The goal is a portrait that feels recognisably them. And it makes for an excellent special gift that feels personal, considered, and lasting.
See the how commissioning a piece works and the FAQ below.
How It Works
Commissioning a piece of art is a personal experience, and I want to make the process as smooth and transparent as possible — from first enquiry to delivery.
Step 1 — Get in touch
It starts with a conversation. Reach out via the contact form or email with a couple of photos of your animal, a rough idea of the size you have in mind, and any questions. I'll get back to you promptly with a quote and everything you need to move forward.
Step 2 — Choose your photos
Clear, well-lit photos taken at eye level — with the face and eyes in sharp focus — give the best results. Don't worry if you only have older or imperfect shots; I can often work with what you have, and sometimes combine details from several images. If you'd like guidance, just ask.
Step 3 — Choose your size and surface
I paint in oils on two surfaces, each available in three sizes:
300gsm Arches cold-press cotton rag oil paper
A5 — $350
A4 — $650
A3 — $950
20mm deep cradled wooden panel (smooth sanded plywood)
20 x 25cm — $550
25 x 30cm — $800
35 x 40cm — $1,100
other sizes available (max. 80 x 120cm)
All prices are for unframed artwork. A $100 deposit secures your place in the commission schedule, with the balance due on completion.
Step 4 — The painting begins
Using traditional oil paints, I build up your portrait layer by layer — every strand of fur, every whisker, every glint in the eye. The details that make your animal unmistakably them. Most commissions are completed within four to six weeks, with additional time for the oils to cure before shipping.
Step 5 — Review and approval
I'll send you a photo of the finished work before packing and shipping. Once you're happy and the balance is settled, your portrait is carefully packaged for delivery anywhere in Australia.
