The Day of Stolen Bicycles
I was incredibly honoured and grateful to work on this book with Amicus Ink. I had been trying for illustration work for some time and like all illustrators had begun to doubt. Being invited to join the team on this of all projects, was just fantastic. Having experienced both poverty and homelessness, it was quite a personal project and brought back a lot of memories. Having said that, know that I never experienced anywhere near the worst things homelessness brings to individuals and families. When I was young I was very shielded by my mother and always felt she was my home more than any place was. And briefly when I was older and in London with no money and no contacts I slept in scaffolding off the street level for a few weeks till I moved in with people I met on the tube of all places. Anyway obviously homelessness is an enormous worldwide issue with complex causes and if you would like to help here’s some links to groups doing good work and if you’re from a school I’d be more than happy to run an event or two around this book and this issue, just drop me a line on the about me page.
